It’s Friday and the Summer Solstice! Whether you couldn’t care less or will be dancing barefoot in the grass later (my jig may be gin fuelled – it’s called ‘balance’), this week is the summer solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere (winter if your’re down under) and a perfect opportunity to reflect on the previous half of the year.
I set some vague business goals way back in January, that talked a lot about ‘being more visible’, mentoring some amazing entrepreneurs, and supporting incredible businesses. Well today it’s clear to me that I have acheived all of those, frankly ill-set, targets (had January me not heard of SMART goals? I’m sure I had…) and much more!
The summer solstice is is ALL about the increase of intense, high energy light and warmth, – pure life force energy. It is about awakening, or reaching enlightenment, as an omnipotent symbol of ascension and the ultimate triumph of light over darkness.
I’ll say that bit again… omnipotent symbol of ascension.
Yep – this time is yours to look deep down and identify what you want and how you can get it. That means setting specific goals that take you one step closer to where you want to be.
In case you have forgotten those elements of what make goals great;
S = Specific
How? What? Where? Pin those little buggers down to the second if you need to! The more specific your description, the bigger the chance you’ll get exactly that.
M = Measurable
This is where we set out the steps we need to get concrete evidence that the plan is working. What will you will see, hear and feel when you reach your goal? Defining the physical manifestations of your goal or objective makes it clearer, and easier to reach.
A = Attainable
Now, there’s nothing wrong about dreaming BIG here! Reach for the stars in my opinion and don’t hold back! But the key point is, if you identify a goal that is pie-in-the-sky or will take much more effort than you are willing to put in, it’s not attainable. If its a huge goal, girl you gotta be ready to WORK!
R = Relevant
The key question here is WHY. Think bigger picture – where does this goal fit into it? Will a bigger team make it run more effectively? Are you imposing targets (in this case growth) which are irrelevant to what you really want (in this case efficiency). Let’s get real here.
T = Timely
Time is money my friend. There is sometimes not much point in setting a goal without smaller targets, or a bigger end date. Keep the timeline realistic and flexible, that way you can keep motivated and keep striving for it! Plan ahead and get it in the diary! A dream without a plan is just a wish…
I’ve been sharing lots of my goals in my newsletter recently – everything from going abroad to produce content for clients, to fully booking my coaching rosta by the end of the year. You don’t need to hear my goal breakdowns, but I’ve been getting SUPER clear on being my clients’ brand advocate, architect, story-teller, translator and cheerleader so that when I set targets, I know they’ll stick.
I love working with people who have something important to say, a purpose to share or passion to make a difference, and as a coach and mentor I make sure I ask all the right questions to discover the delicious details and confidence that’s stopping you going after your goals like a freight train.
So – if you’re tackling your goals this summer too, and assessing how far you’ve come, questions you may ask yourself when setting your goals and objectives are:
What exactly do I want to achieve?
What are the conditions and limitations?
Why exactly do I want to reach this goal? What are possible alternative ways of achieving the same?
Need a sounding board or cheerleader to help you get underneath the skin of these wishes and help turn them into reality? Take a look at my coaching packages, and let’s get ready to sprinkle some magic on the summer!
“I had 2 coaching sessions with Laura. Having those sessions were such a breath of fresh air; having someone listen to the quandrums that have been in my own head and “get”what it was I was trying to achieve, and genuinely care.
Laura’s encouraging words and enthusiasm towards my business gave me the bravery and gentle (but firm) push I needed to move forward with my re-brand (which I had been contemplating for over 2 years!). After my second coaching session I stepped on the gas at full speed, and what I (had previously) feared would be a turbulent road turned into a smooth and fruitful journey.”
I highly recommend Laura as a coach!
